Indigo Revolt was the revolt started in Bengal against the growth of indigo in the region. The important dates in the Indigo Revolution were: 

(i) 1777: The indigo cultivation started under the British traders. 

(ii) 1833: Planters were granted free hand in oppression. 

(iii) 1839: The riots begun in Bengal.

  • The blue rebellion took place after the revolt of 1857. There were two systems practised at the time of Indigo Cultivation which were nij and ryoti.
  • The ryots armed with spears, bows and arrows to attacked the indigo factories and planters.
  • Under the nij system, the indigo is grown under the control of Planters . The blue rebellion was held at march 1859 where thousands of ryots were initated this rebellion against of indigo cultivation.
  • In the Ryoti cultivators were forced to sign an agreement and were given loans at low interest to grow Indigo.
  • But soon farmer realise the bad impact of the Loan and hence there were rebellion against it.
