March 1859, the ryots of Bengal  frustrated by the oppressive behavior of Indigo planters and their lathiyals (the Lathi waved big Planter's men), as their payment to the riots had done them no good and they could not grow rice after indigo cultivation on the same land, the ryots took to arms and refused to grow Indigo ( a blue dye). Planter's agents were beaten and ryots refused to pay their rents. Few local Zamindars came and soon rebellion spread over the nearby areas to sustain these poor Riots

EXPLANATION:

Indigo Revolt was the revolt started in Bengal against the growth of indigo in the region. The important dates in the Indigo Revolution were:

(i) 1777: The British traders started cultivating indigo plant.

(ii) 1833: Planters were granted free hand in oppression.

(iii) 1859: Bengal was struck by riots

The uprising began in Nadia where the rebellion against the planters started with Bishnucharan Biswas and Digambar Biswas. It had quickly spread to Murshidabad, Birbhum, Burdwan, Pabna, Khulna, Narail, and so on. Some planters of the indigo were publicly tested and carried out. The depots of indigo have been burnished. Most planters have survived to be rescued. The zamindars were targeted at the rebellious farmers as well. The uprising was brutalized. A number of peasants were mercilessly slaughtered by massive police and military forces, assisted by the British Government and the zamindar. Nevertheless, the uprising, involving nearly all of Bengal, was fairly popular. Even some Zamindars backed up the revolt.
