Why does Marvel attempt to free himself from the clutches of the invisible man?
Marvel was an easy-going man who liked being alone and reclusive. His life before meeting Griffin was quite peaceful, though he had his own challenges to face. Griffin had been coercing him to do things he did not want to do. He forcibly took him to Iping to retrieve his important books; Marvel really had to exert a lot in carrying out Griffin’s plans. At Port Stowe also, he tried to give Griffin a slip, but could not! Griffin stole money from various places and stored it in Marvel’s pockets. Marvel felt his life not only in danger but completely at the mercy of Griffin. He had come to realize that Griffin was a dangerous man. He felt he would be a slave to his commands as long as he was with him. So the moment, he got a chance, he fled from him with Griffin chasing him hard.
What did Griffin do to get clothing and made himself comfortable?
After becoming invisible, Griffin soon realized that by making himself invisible he had done the greatest blunder of his life. He had to make arrangements for clothing on the following occasions as explained below:
At Omniums
Griffin reached this big establishment saving himself from people, cold, and harsh realities immediately after he had made himself invisible. The store was going to be closed, so he decided to spend night inside the store. After the employees had closed the store, Griffin wore stockings, lambswool pants, lambswool vests, a thick comforter, trousers, a lounge jacket, an overcoat and a slouch hat. However, next morning he had to take them off again to save himself as his plan of getting up early failed.
At a Shop near Drury Lane
After escaping from store Omniums, Griffin reached a shop that sold theatrical goods in Drury Lane. Griffin found almost everything to hide his invisibility. At the shop he found old clothes, mask, dark glasses, greyish whiskers, and a wig. He covered his face using in calico dominoes and some white cashmere scarfs, and before leaving the shop he stole the money kept in his till.
At Kemp’s house
After the incident at Jolly Cricketers, Griffin had to take shelter in some house; coincidently, the house turned out to be Kemp’s house. Finally, Kemp provided Griffin clothes to wear.
How do you perceive Dr. Kemp based on his interaction with Griffin?
On the basis of Dr. Kemp’s interaction with Griffin we find the former to be a man of principles who understood his responsibilities to his fellow men and women. Not only he helped Griffin in his hour of need but also dared to risk his life for saving his fellow men and women from the cruel plans of Griffin.
He was quite observant and self-confident scientist. He examined the first traces of the Invisible man’s presence in his house objectively. On coming face with him, Kemp did not at all get started. Without losing his composure, he heard Griffin’s entire story with patience and assured to provide all the help he could. However, after he read all the reports about the invisible man as printed in the newspapers, he sent a word to the police chief, Colonel Adye to come and arrest this criminal.
After he became sure Griffin was a danger mankind, he took decisions in the larger interest of the welfare of the society. The manner in which he got Griffin arrested – by making himself bait, shows he was capable of putting his life in danger for the larger interests of society. Griffin was selfish; but Kemp could sacrifice his own life, this was the main difference between them.
Therefore, Kemp earns the admiration of the readers for the positive qualities for grit and determination.
