Important site of formation of glycoproteins and glycolipids is Golgi apparatus.

Extra information:

  • it was first observed by Camillo Golgi in 1898
  • It consists of many flat, docs shaped sacs called cisternae. They are stacked parallel to each other in concentric manner near the nucleus.
  • They have distinct convex 'cis' phase of forming phase, facing the nucleus and a concave 'trans' phase or maturing phase facing the outer surface of the cell.
  • they help in the formation of lysosomes.
  • they help in the packaging of substances produced by the endoplasmic reticulum.

Glycolipids and Glycoproteins are synthesized in the Golgi Apparatus

  • The Proteins synthesised in the Rough Endoplasmic Reticulum are translocated to the Golgi Apparatus, further they become Glycoproteins

  • The Lipids synthesised in the Smooth Endoplasmic Reticulum are transported to Golgi for formation of Glycolipids

Process

  • In the Golgi,a polysaccharide group(Carbohydrates) gets attached to the polypeptide or the fat molecules forming Glycoproteins and Glycolipids respectively

  • Bonded together by a Glycoscidic Bond
