important terminology of chemistry

In life we may refer to someone's 'element' as the place where they are comfortable or their natural habitat. Yet, in chemistry element refers to the simplest substance that can't be broken down further using chemical means. These include substances such as copper, iron, oxygen, and carbon.
Elements are defined by the numbers of protons they have. However, the number of electrons and neutrons they have can change. A proton is a positively charged particle. Think of a magnet with its positive and negative sides. The proton is the positive side, while the electron is the negative side and is a negatively charged particle. In the element's nucleus there are also neutrons, which are additional particles in the element and are not charged.
Elements make up all matter on the earth. They can interact together and those interactions is the study of chemistry.
