We depend on forests to meet all our requirements(like wood,paper etc). But now, its more apt to say that 'We exploit forests to make our lives luxurious'. Deforestation is now increasingly common and huge buildings and factories are taking up the spaces. Thus human activities are definitely the cause of the steep decrease in forests today.
