he called off the movement on february 7, 1922 because a day earlier ( february 6, 1922 ) a violent encounter between the police and demonstrators took place at chauri chaura in united provinces ( now uttar pradesh ) in which 22 policemen were burnt to death. there were other incidents of violence in bombay and malabar with overtones of communal clashes. gandhi unilaterally called off the movement to the consternation of congress leaders. gandhi was arrested on march 10 and jailed for 6 months. the non cooperation movement collapsed without achieving its cherished goal of ‘swaraj ( self rule ) with in one year’ . but it did result in awakening mass political consciousness with gandhi leading it.
