Answer :

  • Vandhana read a 48 books in 2000 year.

Given :

  • In 1999, Vandhana read 10 Tamil books and 7 Hindi books.
  • in 2000, She read twice as many Hindi books as Tamil books.
  • If 60% of books that she read during the 2 years were Hindi

To find :

  • how many tamil and Hindi books did she read in the year 2000?

Solution :

In 2000,

  • Let the number of Tamil books be x

Given, she read twice as many Hindi books as Tamil books so,

  • Let the number of Hindi books be 2x

Given ,

In 1999 ,

Vandhana read 10 Tamil books and 7 hindi books so,

  • 7 + 10 = 17 books

In 2000 ,

Vandhana read x Tamil books and 2x Hindi books so,

  • x + 2x = 3x

Total number of books Vandhana read in two years = 17 + 3x

Finding the Hindi books :

Vandhana read 7 Hindi books in 1999 and 2x in 2000 so,

she read a total number of Hindi books

  • 2x + 7 Hindi books

If Hindi books comprise 60% of books that she read during the 2 years were hindi then we get,

  • (2x + 7 / 17 + 3x) = 60/100

➞ (2x + 7 / 17 + 3x) = 60/100

➞ 200x + 700 = 1020 + 180x

Now , Subtract 180x from both sides we get,

➞ 20x + 700 = 1020

➞ 20x = 1020 - 700

➞ 20x = 320

➞ x = 320/20

➞ x = 16

Finding how many books did she read in year 2000 :

➞ 3x

➞ 3(16)

➞ 48

Hence , Vandhana read a 48 books in 2000 year.
