Answer:

Atheism is flourishing in India. The Buddha was,if not an atheist, definitely was an agnostic. So are the Jains.Hindus who belive in Advaita Vedanta(popularized by Sr Sankara)are true atheists and don't believe in personal Gods. Rituals and temple worship though substantial in rural areas, are slowly dying out in metropolitan cities across India especially amongst the rapidly increasing middle class. It is absolutely wrong to include Nehru and the others mentioned as atheists. They were scientifically oriented socialists.More and more of the young educated class are now adopting the "Scientific Temper"This does not apply only to Science and Technology but also includes rational thought and action in all fields of human behaviour. It's true that there is a lot of superstition in the country. If one claims that consulting astrology for marriages is superstition, the same can be applied to "love marriages".It depends on what one considers to be superstition. The burning of witches was once commonplace in the West and was eliminated by education. The same will happen all over the world, including India. The need of the hour is to propagate this "Scientific Temper"all over the world where superstitions like heaven, hell and perhaps God are Satan are eliminated from peoples minds and people depend more on their intellect and scientific discoveries.
