Answer

Step-by-step explanation:

Let Tom's present age = t and Peter's present age = p, just to make it easier to see.

in 8 years Tom will be twice as old as Peter was 8 years ago,

t+8 = 2 (p-8)

t+8 = 2p - 16

t = 2p-24

find present age if Tom is now 7 years older than Peter, another equation can be formed here

t = 7+p

Combine both equations

find Peter first, substitute t

2p-24= 7+p

p= 31

Peter's present age= 31

now find Peter's present age using p=31

t = 7+p

t = 7+31

t = 38

Tom's present age = 38
