In a 3 m long narrow tube, HCl is allowed to diffuse in the tube from one end and NH₃ from the other end. If diffusion is started at the same time, predict at what point the white fumes of NH₄Cl will form ?

Given :

Length of tube = 3m

To find :

The point at which the white fumes of NH₄Cl will form

Solution :

Let the distance travelled by HCl = x

So, the distance travelled by NH₃ = 3 - x

According to Graham's Law

Rate ∝ 1 / √m = K / √m = distance travelled / time

HCl :

x / t = K / √36.5

NH₃ :

(3 - x) / t = K /  √17

(3 - x) / x = √36.5 / √17

3√17 - x√17 = x√36.5

3√17 = 10.165x

x = 1.22m

Distance travelled by HCL = 1.22m

Distance travelled by NH₃ = 1.78m

Therefore , length of tube from NH₃ side = 1.78m.
