Ans: 224 m

Solution 1

In a race of 1200m, A can beat B by 120m

=> When A runs 1200 m, B runs (1200-120)= 1080 m ---(1)

In race of 500m, B can beat C by 100m

=> When B runs 500 m, B runs (500-100)= 400 m ---(2)

Now we need to find out  the distance C run when A run 800 m

From (1), when A runs 800 m,  distance covered by B =1080×8001200=720=1080×8001200=720 m

From (2), when B runs 720 m,  distance covered by C =400×720500=576=400×720500=576 m

i.e., When A runs 800 m, C runs 576 m

Therefore, in 800 m race, A beat C by (800-576)=224 m
