In a bag full of small balls, 1/4 of these balls are green, 1/8 are blue, 1/12 are yellow and the remaining 117 white. How many balls are yellow?

Let the total no. of balls = x

1/4 of balls are green = 1x/4

1/8 of balls are blue    = 1x/8

1/12 of balls are yellow = 1x/12

No. of balls are white = 117

1x/4 + 1x/8 + 1x/12 + 117 = x

11x/24 + 117                      = x

11x/24 - x                          = - 117

- 13x/24                            = -117

By cancelling  ' -- ' sign from both sides.

13x/24     =  117

x              =  117 × 24 / 13  

x               =  216 .

Total balls = 216

Balls which are yellow = 1x/12 = 1 × 216 / 12 = 18 balls Ans .
