A Bar-Graph is a pictorial representation of the numerical data by a number of bars ( rectangles)of uniform width erected horizontally or vertically with equal spacing between them. Each bar represents only one value of the numerical data and so there are as many bars as the number of values in the numerical data. The height or length of a bar indicates on a suitable scale the corresponding value of the numerical data.

There are two types of bar graphs:

(i) Horizontal bar graph                  (ii) Vertical bar graph

in a bar graph bars are made sometime horizontal sometime vertical.

it depends what type of data u have. if you have to make comparison then horizontal bar graph is very useful.

for example you have country name and their population ,in these type of data horizontal bar are useful and you can easily compare them

vertical bar graph is useful when presenting data over time.

its disadvantage is that it does not leave much space at the bottom of chart if long label are required.

so, horizontal bar graph are more useful than vertical bar graph
