Answer:

1000 books

Step-by-step explanation:

Percentage sold = 56%

Percentage left = 44%

Books left = 440

Books left = Percentage left = 44% = 440

44% of x = 440

x = 440 * 100/44

x = 1000

∴ The seller displayed 1000 books on the first day.

Given: Books sold on first day of the sale = 56% of the total books displayed

           Number of books left after the sale = 440

To find: Number of books seller displayed on the first day

Let: Number of books displayed on first day = X

Solution:

Books left after the sale = Total books displayed - books sold

According to the given question, books left = 440

i.e.,

440 = X - 56% of X

       = X - \frac{56}{100} × X

       = X - \frac{56 X}{100}

Taking 100 as L.C.M. on R.H.S.

440 = \frac{100X - 56X}{100}

       = \frac{44X}{100}

Using cross-multiplication

440 × 100 = 44X

44X = 44000

X = \frac{44000}{44}

X = 1,000

Hence, total books displayed on first day = 1,000
