FAN is written as 17

F is the 6th letter, A is the 1st letter and N is the 14th letter

6+1+14 = 21

But we need 17

So we subtract 4

(6+1+14) - 4 = 17

Same rule when applied for TON, which is coded as 45

T is the 20th letter, O is the 15th letter and N is the 14th letter

(20+15+14) - 4 = 45

So the rule is : Add up the corresponding numbers of the alphabets in the word and subtract 4 from the sum

Applying this rule for MAD

M is the 13th letter, A is the 1st letter and D is the 4th letter

(13+1+4) - 4 = 14

Hence MAD could be coded as 14

Hence the answer is 14
