In a certain examination, a total of 3768 students secured first division in the years 2006 and 2007. The number of first division in 2007 exceeded those in 2006 by 34. How many students got first division in 2006?

The number of students who got first division in 2006 are 1867 and in 2007 there are 1901 students

EXPLANATION :

Let the students who got first division in the year 2006 be x

And year 2007 be y

So y = x + 34

Total = x+y = 3768

Substituting value of y,

x + x + 34 = 3768

2x = 3734

x = 3734/2 = 1867

y = 1867 + 34 = 1901

So total no. of students who got first division in 2006 = x = 1867

And in 2007 the no. of students are 1901
