Let the total number of students be 100x.
Number of male students= 40% of total students= 40x
Since 40% is male, the rest of 60% of students has to be female.
Therefore number of female students= 60% of total students = 60x
Number of male students that play varsity sport= 50% of 40x = 20x
Number of female students that play varsity sport= 60% of 60x = 36x
Number of male students that do not play varsity sport = Total number of male students - Number of male that play varsity sport= 40x - 20x = 20x
Number of female students that do not play varsity sport = Total number of female students - Number of female that play varsity sport= 60x - 36x = 24x
Therefore total number of students that do not play varsity sport = 20x + 24x = 44x
Percentage of students that do not play varsity sport = (44x/100x)x100= 44%
