Answer:

Step-by-step

Let the no. of males and females be x and y

 x +  y = 9000                           - { i }

5% of x increase means 1.05x

8% of y increase means 1.08x

thus,

  1.05x +  1.08y = 9600            - { ii  }

eq ii - eq ii

  0.05x + 0.08y = 600

By removing decimals,

  5x + 8y = 60000

from eq i write,

   5(9000-y) + 8y = 60000

   45000 - 5y + 8y = 6000

   y = 5000

by putting y in eq i

   x = 4000

then,

x / y = 4000/5000

       = 4/5

       =4:5
