Given  : in a city, there are 540 shop,

some of them are cooperatives the other are privately owned

the probability that a shop selected randomly is privately owned is 25/27

To Find : how many shops in the city are cooperatives

Solution:

Total Shops = 540

probability that a shop selected randomly is privately owned is 25/27

Hence 25 / 27  = Number of shop privately owned / Total Shops

=> 25/27 =  Number of shop privately owned/540

=> 25 = Number of shop privately owned/20

=> 25 x 20 = Number of shop privately owned

=> 500 = Number of shop privately owned

cooperatives shops = Total Shops - Privately owned

=> cooperatives shops = 540 - 500

=> cooperatives shops =  40

40 shops in the city are cooperatives
