The best way to answer is to write the Given Data first neatly. You can follow the steps that i usually follow while solving such problems which make many things easy. Also this applies only to solutions which are directly proportionate and not inversely proportionate.

60% = x ( number of boys)

40% ( which is 100%-60% ) = 14 ( number of girls)

Cross Multiply

x = (60 x 14) / 40

x = 21.

Hence the number of boys are 21. So the total number of students are : 21 + 14 = 35.

Hope This Helps :)
