Complete Question :-

In a class test (+3) marks are given for every correct answer and (-2)marks are given for every incorrect answer and no marks for not attempting any question.

(i) Radhika scored 20 marks. If she has got 12 correct answers, how many questions has she attempted incorrectly?

(ii) Mohini scores (-5) marks in this test, though she has got 7 correct answers. How many questions has she attempted incorrect?

Given :-

  • Marks given for each correct answer = +3
  • Marks deducted for each incorrect answer = -2
  • Total mark scored by Radhika = 20
  • Correct answers given by her = 12
  • Total mark scored by Mohini = -5
  • Correct answers given by her = 7

To Find :-

  1. Number of answers attempted incorrectly by Radhika.
  2. Number of answers attempted incorrectly by Mohini.

Solution :-

Let the number of incorrect answers given by Radhika be x. We are given that, Radhika answered 12 questions correctly. Hence, total marks originally scored by her = 12 × 3 = 36. Also, total marks that will be reduced from her original marks = -2 × x ( x is the number of incorrect answers).

According to the question,

⇒ (12 × 3) - 2 × x = 20

⇒ 36 -2x = 20

⇒ 2x = 16

⇒ x = 16/2

x = 8

Therefore, Radhika attempted 8 questions incorrectly.

Let the number of incorrect answers given by Mohini be y.

According to the problem,

⇒ (7 × 3) - 2 × y = -5

⇒ 21 - 2y = -5

⇒ 2y = 26

⇒ y = 26/2

y = 13

Therefore, Mohini attempted 13 questions incorrectly.

Hence,

  1. Number of answers attempted incorrectly by Radhika = 8.
  2. Number of answers attempted incorrectly by Mohini = 13.
