Answer
Given,
- Sum of marks in maths and english = 30
- Product of marks if she gets 2 marks more in maths and 3 marks less in english = 210
To find,
Marks she got in maths and english
Solution,
Let she got 'x' marks in maths and 'y' marks in english.
Now,
According to the condition 1st,
⇛ x + y = 30
⇛ x = 30 - y ------------(1)
According to the condition 2nd,
- marks in maths = (x+2)
- marks in english = (y-3)
Product = 210
So,
⇛ (x + 2)(y - 3) = 210
⇛ xy - 3x + 2y - 6 = 210
⇛ xy - 3x + 2y - 216 = 0 -----------(2)
Putting value of 'x' from (1) to (2)
⇛ (30-y)(y) - 3(30-y) +2y - 216 = 0
⇛ 30y - y² - 90 + 3y + 2y - 216 = 0
⇛ -y² + 35y - 306 = 0
⇛ y² - 35y + 306 = 0
Here we got a quadratic equation . Let us solve it by splitting the middle term method.
⇛ y² - 18y - 17y + 306 = 0
⇛ y(y-18) -17(y-18) = 0
⇛ (y - 17)(y - 18) = 0
- y = 17
- y = 18
Hence she got 17 or 18 marks in English.
If she got 17 marks in English then by (1) we get marks in maths = 13
If she got 18 marks in English then by (1) we get marks in maths = 12
