Given : In a class there are 16 students whose average is decreased by 3 months, when 2 students aged 24 and 26 years respectively are replaced by the same number of students.

To Find : the average age of the new students

Solution:

Let say the average age of the new students  = X  years

2 Students are replaced hence number of new students = 2

Age of 2 new students = 2X  years

Earlier Average  =  A years

Students = 16

Total age = 16A  years

New total Age = 16A - 24 - 26  + 2X

= 16A  + 2X  - 50  Years

New Average  = A - 3/12  = A - 1/4 years   (∵ average is decreased by 3 months)

=> 16(A - 1/4) = 16A  + 2X  - 50

=> 16A - 4 = 16A + 2X - 50

=> 2X = 46

=> X = 23

the average age of the new students = 23 years
