Step-by-step explanation:

Given:-

In a college 63% of students are less than 20 years of age.The number of students more than 20 years of age is 2/3 of number of students of 20 years of age which is 42.

To find:-

what is the total number of students in the college ?

Solution:-

Let the total number of students in the college be X

So, 100% = X

Number of students who are less than 20 years of age = 63% of the total students

=> 63% of X

=> (63/100)×X

=> 63X/100

Number of students who are of 20 years = 42

Number of students more than 20 years of age

= 2/3 of the students who are of 20 years

= (2/3)×42

=> (2×42)/3

=> 84/3

=> 28

Number of students more than 20 years. = 28

Total number of students =

Students who are (Less than 20 years + 20 years + more than 20 years)

=> X = (63X/100)+(42)+(28)

=> X = (63X/100) + 70

=> X = (63X+7000)/100

=> X× 100 = 63 X +7000

=> 100X = 63 X +7000

=> 100X -63X = 7000

=> 37X = 7000

=> X = 7000/37

=> X = 189.189...

Number of students = 189

(or)

Number of students less than 20 years = 63%

100-63 = 37%

37% of the students of 20 years and more than 20 years

Number of students who are of 20 years = 42

Number of students more than 20 years of age

= 2/3 of the students who are of 20 years

= (2/3)×42

=> (2×42)/3

=> 84/3

=> 28

=> 37% of X = 42+28

=> (37/100)×X = 70

=> 37X/100 = 70

=>37X = 7000

=> X = 7000/37

=>X = 189.189....

(Number of students can not be decimal number)

=>X = 189

Number of students = 189

Answer:-

Total number of students in the college = 189
