in a competitive exam 5 marks are given for every correct answer and (-2) marks are given for
every incorrect answer and no marks for not attempting any question.
a. Sara scored 24 marks. How many questions has she attempted incorrectly if she got 14 correct
answers?
b. Though Neha got 9 correct answers she scored (-7) marks in the exam. Find the number of
questions attempted by her incorrectly.

At least you should have written that how many questions are there in exam. Otherwise we can't know that how many questions each one has not attempted.

a. No. of marks awarded for 14 correct answer = 14 × 5 = 70

No. of marks deducted if her score is 24 = 70-24 = 46

No. of questions incorrect if 46 marks are deducted = 46÷2 = 23

b. No. of marks awarded for 9 correct answers = 9×5 = 45

No. of marks deducted if her score is (-7) = 45-(-7) = 52

No. of answers incorrect if 52 marks are deducted = 52÷2 = 26
