Let the number of failed students  =  x

Number of passed students  = 4x

Therefore,

Total number of students = x + 4x = 5x

If there were 35 fewer students appeared and had 9 more failed, then the equation will be -

= 5x - 35

Number of failed students = x + 9

Number of passing students = ( 5x-35) - (x + 9)

= 4x - 44

( 4x - 44) : ( x + 9) = 2:1

2 ( x + 9 ) = 4x-44

2x + 18 = 4x - 44

2x - 4x = -44 - 18

-2x = -62

x = 31

Therefore total students = 5x = 5 × 31  = 155
