Number of candidates appeared from each state = 4000

Let the total number of candidates = x

Candidates from Tamilnadu and pondicherry each = x/2

Candidates selected from Tamilnadu = 21/100 × x/2 = 0.105x

Candidates selected from pondicherry = 21/100 × x/2 - 240

= 0.105x -240

Total number of selected candidates = 18x/100

=> 0.105x + 0.105x -240 = 0.18x

=> 0.21x -240 = 0.18x

=> 0.03x = 240

=> x = 8000

Total candidates who appeared for the exam = 8000

Candidates from each states = 4000
