Given,

In a compound  of sulphur and oxygen their mass ratio is 1 : 1.

To Find,

The molecular formula for compound if the atomic mass of sulphur is 32.

Solution,

Atomic mass of oxygen = 16 u

Atomic mass of sulphur = 32 u

If we have the ratio like this, we have:

32 : 16

= 2 : 1

Therefore in order to make the ratio as 1 : 1, we have to add one more atom of oxygen.

16 x 2 = 32

So, we have the ratio as 2 : 2 and it can be written as 1 : 1.

Conclusion,

In this compound where the ratio of the elements are 1 : 1, there are 2 oxygen atoms and 1 sulphur atom. Therefore the compound formed is sulphur dioxide ( SO_{2}).

Knowledge Bytes:

SO_{2} is an acidic gas that combines with water to form sulphuric acid and causes acid rains.

→ This gas as the elements in the ratio 1:1.

→ Its molar mass is 64.066 g/mol.

→ Sulphur was dicovered by Antoine Lavoisier in the year 1777 and is the 10th most abundant element in the world.
