Given:

In a crystal compound having the molecular formula, x2y3 y atoms are arranged as ccp.

To Find:

The fraction of tetrahedral voids will be recovered by x atoms.

Solution:

To find the fraction of tetrahedral voids that will be recovered by x atoms we will follow the following steps:

As we know,

Void tetrahedral = 2× void octahedral = 2× lattice points.

As y atoms are present in the ccp, that means at a lattice point. so, number of y atoms can be written as 4× 3/4.

Now,

The formula of a compound can be written as

x2y4× 3/4.

It can also be written as x2× 4/3y3.

As x atoms are present in tetrahedral voids so, x atoms should be 8.

So, number of x atoms is 2× 4/3 = 8/3

The percentage of x atoms is 1/3× 100 = 33.33%.

Henceforth, the fraction of tetrahedral voids will be recovered by x atoms is 1/3.
