the correct quotient is 20.

Solution : first, to find the dividend, we will use the first equation- x÷ 12 = 35.

x= 35 × 12

x = 420

thus, 420 is the dividend.

then, for the correct quotient- 420÷21.

That is 20.

Given

The correct divisor = d = 21

The mistook divisor = d' = 12

The obtained quotient = 35

To find :

The correct quotient

Solution :

Let The correct quotient = q

Let The dividend = D

let The remainder = R

Since we know

Dividend = divisor × quotient + remainder

From condition I

 D = d × quotient + R

Or,  D = 21 × q + R        ..........1

From condition II

 D = d' × quotient + R

Or,  D = 12 × 35 + R        ..........2

Solving eq 1 and eq 2

     21 × q + R = 12 × 35 + R

Or,   21 × q  = 12 × 35

∴              q = \dfrac{12\times 35}{21}

i.e            q = 4 × 5

Or,      Quotient = q = 20

Hence, The correct quotient is 20  . Answer
