40÷100 ×x= 164-36
4×x=127
x= 127÷ 4
x= 31.75

Let the total marks be x.
Now,the min. marks for passing is 40% of x=0.4x ........(i)

ATQ, A student got 164 marks and failed by 36 marks. This means the min. marks for passing is (164+36)=200 marks .........(ii)

Equating (i) and (ii), we get
0.4x=200
or x=200/(0.4)
or x=500

So the total marks of the examination is 500 marks....

Hope it helps you....
