Given:

First factory machine parts = 140

Defective = 5%

Second factory machine parts = 80

Defective = 10%

To Find:

Percent of  the machine parts were defective

Solution:

Defective parts in the shipment of 140 -

5% of 140 -

= 5/ 100 x 140 = 7

Similarly, defective parts in the shipment of 80 -

10% 0f 80 -

10/100 x 80 = 8

Now,

Total machine parts = 140 + 80 = 220

Total defective parts = 8 + 7 = 15

Percentage of defective parts -

15/220 x 100

= 6.81

Answer: 6.81 % ( Approx 7%) machine parts are defective.
