In a family of 3 children the probability of having at least two boys is 1/2

Given:

  • Family of  Children

To Find:

  • probability of having at least two boys

Solution:

  • Total Children n = 3
  • Boys can be 0 , 1 , 2 , 3
  • Probability of a Boy p = 1/2
  • Probability of a girl ( or not boy) q = 1 - p = 1 - 1/2 = 1/2
  • P(x) = ⁿCₓpˣqⁿ⁻ˣ

Step 1:

Having at least two boys means 2 or 3 Boys Hence probability will be

P(2) + P(3)

Step 2:

Use formula P(x) = ⁿCₓpˣqⁿ⁻ˣ and substitute n = 3 , p = 1/2  q = 1/2  and x= 2 , 3

³C₂(1/2)²(1/2)¹  +  ³C₃(1/2)³(1/2)⁰

Step 3:

Calculate the value

3/8  + 1/8

= 4/8

= 1/2

Hence in a family of 3 children the probability of having at least two boys is 1/2
