Given:

in a family there are several children such that each girl in the family has as many brother as sisters but each of the boy has thrice as many sisters as brother.

To find:

How many sisters and brothers are in the family

Solution:

From given, we have,

in a family, there are several children such that each girl in the family has as many brothers as sisters but each of the boys has thrice as many sisters as a brother.

Let the number of brothers be "x"

1 boy = brothers = x - 1

Then the number of sisters is 3(x - 1)

So, we have,

x + 1 = 3(x - 1)

x + 1 = 3x - 3

1 + 3 = 3x - x

4 = 2x

x = 2

Therefore, the number of boys = 2

The number of sisters = 3(x - 1) = 3(2 - 1) = 3(1) = 3

Therefore, the number of sisters and brothers are 3 and 2 respectively.
