Let the fraction be p/q, the numerator is 5 more than is denominator, therefore p=q+5,when 5 is added to its denominator the fraction becomes p/5+q.
p/5+q
=5+q/5+q (p=5+q)
=1
Now, it is stated that by doing so the fraction is decreased by 5/4.
Therefore we can say,
p/q-5/4=1
p/q=1+5/4
p/q=9/4
We can check our answer by substitution
9/4–5/4=1
4/4=1
1=1
