We have to find total number of trees

Let total number of trees be $x$

According to the question,

$\frac{x}{5}+\frac{x}{8}+\frac{x}{12}+142=x$

Now, taking LCM of $5,8,12$

LCM of  $5,8,12$ $= 120$

Now,

$\frac{24x+15x+10x}{120}= x-142$

$\frac{49x}{120}= x-142$

$49x=120x-17040$

$120x-49x= 17040$

$71x=17040$

$x= \frac{17040}{71}$

$x=240$

Therefore, the total number of trees in garden is $240$.
