it is done because of electromagnetic induction, which is when a voltage is induced by a changing magnetic field.

there is an axle in the generator when it is rotated the kinetic energy is generated in the axle this leads to movement in the armature coil and due to the principle of electromagnetic induction a current is generated in the generator
