In a parallel circuit, the equivalent resistance is 5 Ω and in the case of a series circuit, the equivalent resistance is 20 Ω.

Given:

In a given circuit each resistance is 10 ohm.

To Find:

The equivalent resistance between A and B.

Solution:

Now,

In a circuit, resistances can be either in parallel or in series.

Now, the resistances are 10 Ω each.

Let, there are 2 resistors (R₁ and R₂) in the whole circuit.

Therefore,

In the case of a parallel circuit, according to the Resistance formula,

1/Rₓ = 1/R₁ + 1/R₂

where Rₓ = Total/equivalent Resistance

i.e,

1/Rₓ = 1/10 + 1/10

= 1/5

or, Rₓ = 5 Ω

Now,

if there is a series circuit, according to the Resistance formula,

Rₓ = R₁ + R₂

i.e,

Rₓ = 10 + 10

= 20 Ω

Therefore, in a parallel circuit, the equivalent resistance is 5 Ω and in the case of a series circuit, the equivalent resistance is 20 Ω.
