Let the number of cows be x and number of hens be y.

A cow has 4 legs and 1 head whereas a hen has 2 legs and 1 head.

Total number of legs of cows = 4x  and Total number of legs of hens = 2y

Total number of heads = total number of cows ( because 1 cow has 1 head )= x

Total number of heads of hens = total number of hen ( 1 hen has 1 head ) = y

According to given case, the linear equation in 2 variables will be -

4x + 2y = 2( x+y) + 14

4x + 2y = 2x + 2y + 14

4x - 2x = 14

2x = 14

x =7

Therefore number of cows ( x ) = 7
