Given,

There are 500 chairs.

To find,

Number of minimum extra chairs, so that the number of rows is equal to o number of columns.

Solution,

We can simply solve this mathematical problem by using the following mathematical process.

If, number of rows = number of columns

Then, total number of chairs will be a perfect square.

Now, 500 isn't a perfect square.

We have to find out the nearest perfect square (greater than 500).

First of all, we have to calculate the square root of 500 in long division method :

² ²

_____

2 | 5 00

4

____

42 | 100

84

____

16

Now, two nearby perfect squares :

22 × 22 = 484

23 × 23 = 529

We need (>500) value, as we have to add chairs.

So, number of chairs = 529

Number of extra chairs = 529-500 = 29

Hence, we have to add 29 chairs.
