Given : in a herd of deer ,1/2 of the herd were eating grass , 1/4 of the herd were playing .1/2 of the deer eating grass were eating fast and 1/3 were eating slow  The remaining deer of the herd were sitting.

To find : what portion of the herd was sitting

Solution:

Let say Total deer in herd = 12D

Playing = 12D/4  = 3D

eating Grass Fast   =  (1/2)(1/2)12D  = 3D

eating Grass Slow  =  (1/3)(1/2)12D  =2D

( assuming other deer eating grass were also sittting)

Remaining Deer = 12D - 3D - 3D - 2D  =  4D

portion of the herd   sitting = 4D/12D  =  1/3

1/3 portion of the herd was sitting
