The athletes are made to fall on a sand bed so that the time in which their body comes to rest increases as the feet of the athlete push the sand a little and so they experience a lesser force and do not get hurt, while if they are made to fall on a hard ground there body comes to rest immediately so that might get hurt as they experience a greater force. This is according to Newton's second law of motion .
