in a hydrated magnesium chloride,
MgCl2 • xH2O
The percentage of water is 53.2%
calculate the value of X. [mg=24, Cl= 24.5, H=1 and O=16].

Answer:

Percentage of water in MgCl2.x H2O = 53.2%

So 18x/(95 + 18x) =0.532.

Atomic Mass of Mg= 24

Atomic Mass of Chlorine= 35.5

So Atomic weight of MgCl2= (24+71) =95

So on simplification

(95 + 18x) 0.532 =18x

95 (0.532)= 18x- 0.532(18x)

=50.54= 8.424 x

So x=50.54÷8.424

x =5.997 = ~ 6

Therefore there are 6- water molecules in 2- molecule of Crystalline Magnesium sulphate.
