So the total amount of grains consumed by females

= 4x kg

Total amount of grains consumed by all the members

= ( 72 + 4x ) kg

Total number of family members = ( 12 + x )

So average amount of grains consumed by all the members

So by the given condition

$\displaystyle \sf{ \frac{72 + 4x}{12 + x} = 4.5 }$

$\displaystyle \sf{ \implies x = \frac{18}{0.5} }$

$\displaystyle \sf{ \implies x = 36 }$

∴ The number of females = 36

Hence the total number of family members

= 36 + 12

= 48
