Salts of Sulphates (SO4), Chlorides (Cl) or Hydrogen Carbonates (HCO3) of Calcium (Ca) or Magnesium (Mg) can be added to tap water to make it hard.

The cleaning capacity of soap can be compared by mixing equal amount of soap in water to two test tubes and shaking them vigorously.

One can compare the amount of foam that is formed in each test tube as hard water will not make much foam.
