All living organisms produce offspring in order to continue the existence of the species. This process of replicating or making copies of themselves is called 'reproduction'. Reproduction is broadly divided into two categories, namely, sexual and asexual reproduction. Sexual reproduction is the one in which two parents contribute two gametes and the union of these gives an offspring. This type of reproduction gives rise to genetic variation. Sexual reproduction is found in higher invertebrates and all vertebrates. Asexual reproduction includes a single parent that is capable of generating an offspring identical to itself. Asexual reproduction is found in lower organisms. Also, asexual reproduction is said to require a shorter time as compared to sexual mode of reproduction.
