\large{Answer:}

1000 runners began the race

\large{Explanation:}

Let the total no. of runners who began the race be 'x'

90% of x = 90/100* x

= 9/10 x

30% of 9/10x are men,

= 30/100*9x/10

= 27/100*x

Given

270 are men.

Therefore;

27/100*x = 270

x= 270"100/27

x=1000

So,the number of people who began the race were 1000 both men and women
