Let the quantity of milk and water be 4x and x
A/q,
4x+x=40
5x=40
x=8

So,quantity of milk=4x=32
And quantity of water=8

Let the quantity of water been added is x.

Then, 2/3=32/8+x
16+2x=96
2x=80
x=40

So 40 leter of water should be added.

Answer:

40 litres of water must be added to the misture

Step-by-step explanation:

Explanation:

Given ,  the ratio of milk and water  = 4: 1

And we have total 40 litres of milk

Let x be the litres added to the mixture.

Step 1:

Quantity of Milk in mixture of 40 litres  = \frac{4}{5}× 40 = 32 litres

So,  the quantity of  water in mixture  of 40 liters = 40 - 32 = 8 litres.

Now, let  x litres of water be added to the  mixture ,

And the ration of milk and water after adding water is 2: 3

\frac{2}{3} = \frac{32}{ 8+ x}

⇒2 (8 + x) = 96

⇒16 + 2x = 96 ⇒ 2x = 80

⇒ x = 40 litres

Final answer:

Hence , 40 litres of water  be added to the misture .
