In a mixture of 400 litres of milk and water, the ratio of milk and water is 9 : 1. What amount of water should added to the milk such that the new mixture of milk and water maintains a ratio of 3 : 1? ​

1. Answer is 93.33 litres

quantity of milk in the mixture = 9/10×400 = 360 litres

quantity of milk in the mixture = 1/10 × 400 = 40 litres

let the water added be x

so,

 \frac{400}{40 + x}   =  \frac{3}{1}

400= 3(40+x)

400= 120+ 3x

400-120= 3x

280 = 3x

 \frac{280}{3}  = x

93.33 = x

93.33 litres of water should added to the milk such that the new mixture of milk and water maintains a ratio of 3 : 1
